A four-goal second period proved to be the difference as the Kingston Frontenacs earned a 4-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves on Tuesday night in the Nickel City.
After a scoreless opening period, Kingston once again struck first in the series, with Matthew Soto capitalizing on a power play.
Moments later, University of Vermont commit Cedrick Guindon buried a feed from Quinton Burns for his fifth goal of the postseason, doubling the Frontenacs’ lead.
Sudbury captain and Belleville native Donovan McCoy responded at 11:21 of the second, firing a point shot to get the Wolves on the board.
Less than a minute later, defenceman Maleek McGowan restored Kingston’s two-goal cushion, finding himself alone in front and making no mistake.
Former OJHL standout Ben Pickell added to the Frontenacs’ advantage late in the frame, snapping a quick shot from the high slot to send Kingston into the intermission with a 4-1 lead.
With under two minutes to play and goaltender Nate Krawchuk pulled for the extra attacker, San Jose Sharks first-rounder Quentin Musty gave the Wolves some hope, but that was as close as they would get.
Kingston remained disciplined throughout, taking just one minor penalty, which came at 14:37 of the final period.
Overage netminder Charlie Schenkel continued his strong postseason, turning aside 25 shots in another Frontenacs victory.
Kingston heads into Thursday night’s Game 4 at Sudbury Community Arena with a chance to complete the sweep in their best-of-seven first-round series.
